Inspired by the red glow of a total lunar eclipse, when sunlight bends through Earth’s atmosphere and softly illuminates the Moon.
- During a total lunar eclipse, Earth passes between the Sun and Moon.
- This places the Moon within Earth’s darkest shadow. Yet the Moon remains visible.
- This is because some sunlight is filtered and refracted through Earth’s atmosphere.
- Shorter wavelengths are scattered more strongly, while red light continues into the shadow and softly illuminates the lunar surface.
