Earth’s upper mantle is composed largely of peridotite. Under the right conditions, parts of it partially melt to produce basaltic magma. At temperatures above roughly 1,100°C, this molten rock glows orange-red from thermal radiation. When it reaches the surface, it cools rapidly and solidifies into dark basalt.
