Lightning forms when collisions among ice particles and water droplets inside a thunderstorm help separate electrical charges within the cloud. When the resulting electric field becomes strong enough, the air ionizes and forms a conductive plasma channel, producing a powerful electrical discharge. Lightning channels can reach temperatures around 30,000°C—far hotter than the Sun’s surface. Depending on atmospheric conditions and how the light is scattered, lightning can sometimes appear violet or purple.
