Coal formed from ancient plant material buried in swampy environments and transformed by heat and pressure over millions of years. The chemical energy stored in that material ultimately came from sunlight captured through photosynthesis. When burned, coal releases this stored energy, historically powering steam engines, electrical generation, and much of modern industrial development.
