Text on back:  孝 (xiào) is a foundational concept in Confucianism. It refers to respect, care, and responsibility toward one’s parents and ancestors. It extends beyond family into social order and duty. I use it here as a symbol for Confucianism to denote the respect that Confucius had for the past. He said of his own project that he was “a transmitter and not a maker, believing in and loving the ancients” (The Analects Book 7). Confucianism in my view embodies the spirit of humility and a mindset of growth. It is a philosophy of securing one's roots before branching, seeking balance, gathering wisdom (which is what I've also tried to do in this collection), and recognizing that we are part of a larger history.
