Collection: Volcanic Cinder

Cinder cones are steep, conical hills that usually have a prominent crater at the top. They form when gas-rich magma is forced upward and fragmented into molten pieces (tephra). These fragments cool rapidly as they fall, creating porous, iron-rich rock known as scoria. Iron within the rock can oxidize—producing deep red, maroon, and burgundy tones. A similar process contributes to the color of Mars, where iron-rich materials have oxidized over billions of years, coating much of the surface in a reddish hue.
